Electricity market calculators
Six free calculators for the figures power professionals work out every day. Each one shows its formula, a worked example and dated benchmarks from public datasets and Tera's own measurements.
MW, MWh and MVA converter
MW measures power, the rate of flow; MWh measures energy, power over time: MWh = MW × hours. MVA is apparent power, and MW = MVA × power factor.
Open calculatorCapacity factor calculator
Capacity factor is the energy a plant produced divided by what it would have produced at full rated power for the whole period: CF = E / (P × h).
Open calculatorLCOE calculator
The levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) is the constant price per MWh that recovers a plant's capital, operating and fuel costs over its life at a given discount rate: LCOE = (capex × CRF + fixed O&M) / (8.76 × CF) + variable O&M + fuel.
Open calculatorReserve margin calculator
The reserve margin is the capacity a power system holds above its peak demand, as a share of that peak: (capacity - peak) / peak. The capacity margin divides by capacity instead.
Open calculatorSolar farm land calculator
The land a solar farm needs is its capacity times the land each MWp takes: area = MWp × m² per MWp. The densities here are measured from mapped plant outlines, by country, with the typical range of plants.
Open calculatorGrid emissions calculator
Emissions from electricity are the energy used times the grid's emissions intensity: tCO2e = MWh × gCO2e/kWh / 1,000. Pick a country and a year to apply Ember's lifecycle intensity of that grid.
