For Project Developers
Find Substations With Grid Connection Headroom
Screen substations by the capacity they can still take for generation, demand and storage, as published by network operators, and see the lines, plants and projects around each one before you commit to a site.
How it works
From a region to a shortlist of connection points
01
Start from the map
Open the region you are developing in and show substations, lines and generation by voltage level and technology.
02
Read the headroom
Open a substation to see what it can still take for generation, demand and storage, what is already committed or queued, and when the operator published the figures.
03
Check what is nearby
See the operating plants and projects in development around the substation, and the companies behind them, before you approach landowners or the network operator.
FAQ
Common questions about grid headroom
- What is grid connection headroom?
- Headroom is the capacity a substation or part of the network can still accept for new generation, demand or storage without reinforcement. Operators usually publish it in MW or MVA, often separately for each direction, and it changes as projects connect or withdraw.
- Is published headroom a guarantee of connection?
- No. It is an indicative figure from the network operator at a given date. A formal connection application and the operator's own studies decide what can actually connect, and other projects can take capacity in the meantime.
- Where does headroom data come from?
- From network operators. A growing number of transmission and distribution operators publish the capacity still available at their substations, in formats ranging from substation tables to heat maps. Wherever they do, Tera shows the figures in the substation record with the date they were published.
- What if my target market does not publish headroom?
- You can still screen substations by voltage level, see the lines connecting them, and check how much generation and how many projects in development already cluster nearby. A crowded substation with a long pipeline is a strong warning sign before you pay for studies.
